I lost my 3rd grade spelling bee by misspelling “Thing.”

The definition of “thing” is loose: an object not precisely designated. The definition of “thang” however is unboxable. Brands with that “thang” trade consumers for fans; they create (not copy) culture; they are certifiably themselves. I work with founders whose brands who possess these qualities:

  • Person. Behind every good brand is a legitimate, bleeding, human who gives a damn.

  • Place. Behind every good brand is a place where it was born or where its fans exist as community.

  • Thang. Behind every good brand is that “thang” that makes them special. Maybe it’s the product*, maybe it’s the experience, maybe it’s magic.
